2024 has been a year of deep personal and professional transformation for me. I grew up with no sense of personal boundaries… as a result of which, abuse became an integral part of my being. So much so that I actively pursued abusive relationships.
Having started work on abuse as the core of my artistic practice has brought with it, critical understanding of the repeated patterns within my own life too.
This year I finally made a clean departure from several trauma infusing relationships and instead actively started to seek my self worth.
As a part of this journey I have also experimented a lot with my work… living in a permanent state of creativity and collaboration .
From just taking images I’ve found greater satisfaction in the act of making an image… working on the surface of the print to see what more can be said? How the nuances of one specific story can be revealed in the multiple layers of an artwork?
Over this final month of 2024 I will share some of my artistic explorations that didn’t see the light of day.
Working with narratives of child abuse has been an important dream for me and for whenever that opportunity may come, I am already conversing with survivors and thinking through visual representations.
One such reckoning is what I’m sharing today. Using 3D origami to create wings because she said she wants “to fly.” The thought behind this was our sense of absolute loss of control as a survivor of CA and through giving ourselves what we want… handing over control to ourselves. Gold because of the cultural importance of this colour in South Asia.
Still thinking through myriad other thoughts… still speaking and collaborating with survivors everywhere I go… I’m sure one day this project will “become.” And most certainly it will be completely different from my imagination… that’s the beauty of art… the only state it is ever in, is a state of transformation.
